Type of installation
The optical fiber is a glass wire that allows to conduct light. It is used for data transfer with multiple applications. It has revolutionized telecommunications and computing by increasing the speed of networks and the distance of connection, which was previously impossible. It is now one of the main mediums for internet access for major providers. It is also used in companies for high-speed local networks. There are several types of optical fiber for multiple applications. The two types of optical fibers used are multimode and single mode.
The main advantages of fiber optics include the very high transmission rate and distance compared to copper cables. Stability is also a major asset unlike long range WiFi. In the past, its biggest disadvantage was the cost of installation. The cost of materials was high compared to network cabling, which however does not offer these advantages. Over time, manufacturing costs have decreased considerably, so the price for the purchase of fiber optics is now affordable.
WHAT TYPE OF FIBER TO CHOOSE:
Multimode optical fiber or MMF comes in 5 varieties. The varieties of multimode optical fiber are OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 and OM5. The OM1 is of lower quality than the OM5. Each variety is represented by a different color and have their own physical characteristics. The main differences between these varieties are the speed that can be achieved and the transmission distance. It is ideal for local networks because of its limited distances of maximum 1 KM. The 3 main types of connectors for termination are SC, LC and ST.
As for the single mode optical fiber, it has a smaller core which allows to reach a great distance between 10 and 200km. It also allows to reach higher throughput than multimode. There are only two varieties of fiber optics: OS1 and OS2. The differences between OS1 and OS2 are mainly the construction of the cable and the data rate. The OS1 is used indoors, for 1G and 10G networks. The OS2 is used outdoors on poles, buried or in underground spaces. It supports 40G and 100G networks. It is recommended to use OS2 for networks longer than 2KM.
