Multimode optical fiber or MMF comes in 5 varieties. The varieties of multimode optical fiber are OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 and OM5. The OM1 is of lower quality than the OM5. Each variety is represented by a different color and have their own physical characteristics. The main differences between these varieties are the speed that can be achieved and the transmission distance. It is ideal for local networks because of its limited distances of maximum 1 KM. The OS1 is used indoors, for 1G and 10G networks. The OS2 is used outdoors on poles, buried or in underground spaces. It supports 40G and 100G networks.
